Children with Learning Disabilities and Problems Reading

Hello everyone

I have been asked a few times how things have been going since I got the boys tested so I thought I would send an email and let you all know.  I will gladly answer any individual questions any of you might have weather I know you or not.  I also wanted to let you know that it is fine with me if you forward my previous email and/or this one to anyone you think could be helped by it.

It has been 4 weeks since we have been diagnosed and starting using colored paper and colored overlays and it has made a world of difference.  I can not believe it. I had two different people tell me within the first week what a difference in the boy’s self esteem they noticed.

Brandon has started reading books for fun.  He will say I am going to read two chapters tonight and he does.  The big thing is her remembers what he read.  The reading that we have been doing is he would read a chapter of a book and I would ask him 5-7 questions about what he read.  Before he was lucky if he could get 2 of the questions right.  Now it is rare for him to get one wrong.  I honestly truly believe he has gone from reading and comprehending at a 1 st grade level to at least a 3 rd grade level.  He was a fairly fluent reader before but would never understand what he read.  Know he can give me book reports.  His fluency in reading has improved greatly too.

Preston has made huge leaps and bounds to.  I have seen more improvements in him but that is because he has it worse then Brandon.  He was struggling with reading.  He could NOT sound out a word.  He would picture read or guess at words.  Some times he would take a letter from the line right below where he was reading and put it in place of one of the words he was reading and he would make a new word.  He OFTEN told me when I worked with him mom you are confusing me.  I don’t get it.  Mom that letter was just there.  He now can read a book without pictures.  He was a HORRIBLE speller.  Some of the mistakes he made was he would write yuor instead of your.  He would write dab instead of bad.  Once in a while he would write a letter or number backwards.  The first two days after using colored paper he got a 100% on his spelling test, his first EVER.  For him his handwriting improved too.   Before it was so bad you almost couldn’t read it.  The FIRST time he used colored paper it improved to good.  When he tries he has nice hand writing.  Before no matter how hard he tried he could not get the letters to start and stop where they were supposed to.  He had bad spacing.  The lists for him go on and on.

I also want to share with you don’t make the same mistake I did.  When I first read/looked at the website I read the symptoms and thought no my boys don’t have this because one is a good speller and the other isn’t.  One can read but not understand and the other cant read but when they finally get it read they do remember what they read.  I thought they both have such different symptoms this can’t possible be us.  So I quit looking at it.  But after 3-4 more months of frustration I looked at it again and talked to specialist and realized it is my boys.  They are each individuals and have individual symptoms.  It is so different for everyone.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story.  If I can help just one person it will be great.

Peace and Love
Jolene
