When I was growing up, I remember asking my mom if I could do X or Y or do Z.
She never said no. She almost always said, yes you can do that, but not right now. Maybe never.
Whenever my mom heard me say can’t, she would usually stop me and say, what do you mean you cannot, you just have not learned how. Or You just don’t know yet. Or you are not able to do it now. It doesn’t mean you can’t.
Can’t is one of those words that everyone could benefit from banishing from their vocabulary.
Can’t is only a temporary “no”. With enough of anything, can’t always turns into a possible. Time has proven that over and over again.
So instead of can’t, use things like:
I can, but not right now.
That can be done, but is just hasn’t been done by anyone yet.
That could happen, but it hasn’t yet.
It is possible, we just don’t know how yet
Start changing your vocabulary to speak in possibility, rather than can’t.
And believe it or not, can’t is now in the dictionary. Although I think we would all be better off without can’t in our own vocabulary. |
