Habits and Teaching old dogs new tricks
Everything you ever learned how to do you had to learn how to do. If you do something long enough, it becomes a habit and you start doing it unconsciously.
Like driving. When you learned how to start driving, you had to focus, think of each step after the next.
Step on the brake
Shift the gears
Release the brake
Step on the gas
Check the mirrors
Turn on the signal
Etc, etc.
Now you drive down the road, talking on your phone, writing down directions, eating your lunch steering with your knee.
If you want to form a new habit, or do something new, you have to take the time and patience to learn. Just like when you first learned to do anything.
The problem why most people don’t learn when they get older is they expect to get it right the first try. And if they don’t, they often give up and quit learning.
So next time you want to do something new, realize it takes time to learn. The only reason you cannot learn is because you don’t allow your self enough time to do so. |
